Should all messages across Facebook's platforms be encrypted?

Privacy experts are concerned about Facebook’s encryption plans.

The UK government claims that a result of this encryption plan could be that it hinders the speed with which investigations into terrorism and child sexual abuse cases are handled.

Facebook has said that it is “consulting closely with child safety experts, governments and technology companies and devoting new teams and sophisticated technology” to keep people safe online.

An open letter asking Facebook to rethink its plans to encrypt all messages on its platform has been signed by UK Home Secretary Priti Patel, US Attorney General William P Barr and more.

The letter states:

“Tech companies like Facebook have a responsibility to balance privacy with the safety of the public”

Public opinion is split on whether the new encryption plans are good or bad.
