How far back should our accountability stretch?

How far back should our accountability stretch?

Amidst a federal election, a photo of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wearing “brownface” at an Arabian Nights-themed party in 2001 has been uncovered.

Time Magazine released the photo, and a spokesperson from the Liberal Party of Canada has confirmed that the photo is of Trudeau.

The prime minister has since apologised:

“I apologise profoundly … I regret it deeply. I’m deeply sorry I did that, I should have known better.”

Conservative party leader Andrew Scheer released a video in response:

“Wearing brownface is an act of open mockery and racism. It was just as racist in 2001 as it is in 2019 … and what Canadians saw this evening is someone with a complete lack of judgment and integrity and someone who is not fit to govern this country.”

The photo was taken almost 20 years ago, and Trudeau was 30 years old at the time.

Whilst most would agree that Trudeau’s actions showed bad judgement at the time of the photograph, is his opponent correct in suggesting that it makes him unfit to govern now?
