Boohoo's "Send nudes" advert banned by ASA

Boohoo's "Send nudes" advert banned by ASA

An advert by retailer Boohoo has been banned for using the phrase “send nudes”.

The campaign was intended to advertise a range of clothes coloured to resemble skin.

However, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) filed a complaint on the grounds that it made light of a “potentially harmful social trend”.

They claimed that although they are aware the ad played on a well-known fashion trend, the term “send nudes” could be interpreted as a request for sexual photos, which can be a form of sexual harassment.

A Boohoo spokeswoman responded:

"The reference to 'nudes' in this particular email related to the nude fashion trend, which was apparent from the body of email which contained a photo of a model wearing a beige jacket with the words 'Send Nudes'."

The ASA were specifically concerned that children may have seen the email. However, the retailer responded by pointing out that individuals must be at least 18 years of age to subscribe to the emails.

Do you agree with the ASA’s decision to ban the advert?
